In February 2017, NBA 2K17 and NBA officials announced a partnership to create the first eSports league in collaboration with a real sports league. NBA 2K eLeague is a tournament that is set to debut in 2018. A new eLeague or a new tournament is nothing out of the ordinary for a game specially designed for eSports but this is the first time when a real world sports league will be represented in an eSports tournament.

The plan is to have a tournament where 30 NBA 2K professional teams compete for the grand title and prize. Each team will be associated with a real NBA team. Five players are part of a team. They will all play with new characters. As the tournament will start in 2018, we can expect to see the first edition being played on the next NBA 2K game but that is not officially confirmed yet. So far, 17 NBA teams were confirmed to be part of the first NBA 2K eLeague tournament that will take place in 2018. Details on how players will be selected to be part of a team are not yet available but most likely professional NBA 2K17 players will be given a chance to represent teams in the new competition. The long time plan is the have 30 teams just like in the real NBA league.

New York Knicks, Orlando Magic, Boston Celtics, Miami Heat and Washington Wizards are among the first 17 NBA teams that already announced their participation in the NBA 2K eSports league. The collaboration will last for at least three years. Some of these NBA teams are already involved in the eSports scene. Two of the teams, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat, have a collaboration with eSports teams such as Team Dignitas and Misfits. Miami Heat representatives announced that the team that will represent them in the NBA 2K eLeague will be under Misfits management. Other teams are expected to announce their participation at a later date.
